Kanonkop, a renowned name in the world of wine, emerged through a rich history and commitment to excellence. Situated in the esteemed wine region of Stellenbosch, South Africa, Kanonkop’s origins trace back to the late 17th century. Its story began when a fearless man named Jan Ernst Louw settled in the area and planted vineyards on the slopes of the Kanonkop hill. Through generations of dedicated winemaking and a steadfast adherence to traditional methods, Kanonkop steadily gained recognition for its exceptional wines, particularly its iconic Pinotage. Today, Kanonkop stands as a testament to a legacy of passion, expertise, and a deep understanding of establishing its well-deserved reputation as a world-class wine estate.

The brief entailed alterations to the interior which included the tasting room, elegant private tasting room, new Vinoteque and access to the gallery. The brief also expressed the need for additions such as the new outside tasting deck and new E-commerce extension where guests can enjoy the wonderful wine blends.

The design approach for the Kanonkop tasting deck and E-commerce extension is centered around creating an immersive and enjoyable experience for guests, allowing them to savour the wonderful wine blends. The New tasting room and Vinoteque was exquisitely designed to elevate the presentation of Kanonkop wines on elegant shelving, illuminated by tasteful LED strip lights, creating a captivating focal point for visitors to admire. In addition to that, one of the rooms also houses an art gallery, accompanied by a cosy lounge, providing guests with a delightful space to unwind and reveal in the artistic and wine-filled experience.

The design incorporates organic elements such as wood, rustic bricks, and sleek concrete, creating a harmonious blend of natural textures and contemporary aesthetics. The entrance arch walkway acts as a threshold when entering the wine cellar. The historic Kanonkop building holds a fascinating story, with its small windows mimicking the strategic openings for shooting during early settlements. However, these windows now play a beneficial role in maintaining a cool temperature inside, which is ideal for the production and storage of exceptional wines. The space is enhanced by the captivating aesthetic of the organic-shaped ceiling boards adorned with elegant LED lights, adding a touch of visual allure to the ambience.

The aim for the Kanonkop renovation was to preserve all the historical elements intact, ensuring that none of its rich heritage was lost in the process.

The new Morning Star Express Hotel is situated just off the Pretoria CBD in Visagie Street. Other landmarks in the area include the Burgers Park Hotel around the corner, and across the street from the Hotel is the beautiful original building of the Staatsmeisjesskool now Hamilton Primary School, a red brick Victorian style building, built at the beginning of the 20th century. The State Theatre is also close by and has started using the funky new hotel for their accommodation needs.

There is some urban deterioration in the area which consists mainly of residential apartment buildings and the upgrade of Morning Star is part of some welcome renewal, which could well provide a lot of stimuli for similar upgrades. The building used to be a boarding house with rather neglected facilities.

The building was completely renovated internally and externally with a double deck parking area at the deck.

Internally the beautiful wooden block flooring has been retained which provided a quality feel that matched the upgraded interior.

En suite bathrooms have been provided to every room and core drilling to the concrete slabs was quite a challenge as the structural integrity was an unknown factor. The existing steel window frames have been replaced with soundproof aluminium windows and AC units which altered the façade completely.

The only available space for a second lift and extension to the restaurant was literally on the street boundary. The blue box, glass façade and scenic lift not only had a dramatic effect on the main façade but provided a very scenic view over the Jacaranda City CBD.

Taking the limited budget into consideration, the transformation was a huge success and became a benchmark for upgrading of existing buildings.

The aim of the project is to involve and educate local, unskilled labourers from the surrounding communities.

The urban farming component makes out the bulk of the project that consists of 28 upcycled containers for hydroponic usage. The fresh crops are grown and sold to the local community. The project’s gentrification will contribute to the estate to host events that fuse technology, data gathering, farming and social interaction during markets and functions.

The tiny holiday village outside Knysna, Buffelsbaai is uniquely surrounded by a Park- and Marine conservation area.

The ±200 houses are on very small stands and most of the original shacks have been demolished or transformed. The American ‘clapperboard’ style which has become popular in the Knysna area is the preferred style.

On this specific project, the challenge was to retain an ugly brick ‘blockhouse’ hated by the locals and to add another floor onto the original wooden & board cladded structure at the back.

The design proposal was to completely transformed brick structure internally and also by latching a light wooden box and a deck onto the façade.

The wooden planks and slats with varying patterns, not only echoes the connotation that Knysna has with the surrounding forests as well a rich history of the wood industry, but It also pushed the brick box to the background of the main facades.

The addition of the adjacent first-floor bedroom wing also broke the starkness of the original structure.

Two hidden gems of the original property, a viewing deck on the roof and a neglected courtyard at the back were unlocked in the design and now popular social spaces for large family, friends and neighbours’ gatherings.

A transformation very well received by locals and adapting to the needs of the client confirms another successful project by NEO Architects.
