Nestled in the Fynbos estate of Romansbaai, this residence is surrounded by indigenous Protea Fynbos, blending seamlessly with its natural surroundings. Rooted in a Scandinavian ethos, the design emphasizes simplicity, spatial harmony, and a close connection with nature. The aim was to dissolve the boundary between indoors and outdoors, offering uninterrupted ocean views from every space.
The brief required a 4-bedroom home with an external guest suite and open-plan living areas, all with optimal ocean views. Challenges included minimizing environmental impact through material reduction and compact design, as well as navigating the steep terrain. Terracing was employed to preserve ocean views and structural integrity, while double glazing balanced expansive views with energy efficiency.
Inspired by the site and client vision, the design embodies simplicity, spatial clarity, and environmental harmony. Expansive glazing, terraced levels, and natural materials foster a seamless indoor-outdoor transition. The compact footprint and sustainable materials minimize environmental impact, while thoughtful spatial planning balances openness and privacy.
Standout features include floor-to-ceiling glass for panoramic views, terraced levels adapting to the slope, a large circular skylight as a sculptural element, and recessed lighting enhancing architectural forms with ambient warmth.
Materials like concrete, timber, and locally sourced stone create a contemporary yet grounded aesthetic. Vertical timber cladding adds warmth, while stone provides permanence. Durable timbers from Cameroon, neutral earthy tones, and matte black steel elements enhance the coastal connection. An open-plan layout ensures seamless flow, with skylights illuminating interiors and maintaining a connection to the sky.
Challenges included the steep topography and preserving the fynbos landscape, addressed through innovative terracing and passive cooling strategies. Double glazing and strategic window placement ensured thermal comfort year-round. Locally sourced materials reduced environmental impact, resulting in a visually striking, ecologically responsible residence.
